News - Women's Perspective

An Okada rider in Orlu, Imo State, was this afternoon, killed by a police inspector for not wearing a face mask. The second reason for the untimely death is that he refused to “settle” the inspector with N50 for the “offence.”

The death of the 27-year old man caused a huge protest along major roads of the city with angry crowds setting up burn-fires, blocking major roads, obstructing traffic and calling for vengeance.

The incident which happened around 3:00pm at Banana Junction had the angry crowds threatening to burn down a police station within the metropolis.

An eye witness said that on realising that the Okada rider had been killed, all the police men on duty at the ruction too to their heals.

The State Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmodele confirmed the incident and gave reassurances that the situation is being managed and would hopefully be brought under control soon.

He sympathised with the family of the deceased saying that it is expected that relatives of a man who is killed will be angry.

According to him, “it is true that a policeman killed a man but the situation is not out of control. People whose loved ones were killed have a right to be angry.”

The Police Commissioner added however, one policeman was stabbed and later rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.
