Okotie Jailed 6 Months for Romance Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has jailed a Nigerian man identified as Harry Prince Okotie for 6 months over a romance fraud.

Okotie was arraigned before Justice Sylvanus Orji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja for his involved in in the fraudulent relationship with a Phillipino lady.

The convict presented himself as Thomas Toud, a drilling engineer from South Korea on Facebook.

He lured his unsuspecting victim, one Richamar into parting with $1,500 in the guise of being in a romantic relationship with her.

okotie was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretences following a report about his involvement in a computer-related fraud.

A statement by the Head, Media and Publicity (EFCC), Mr Wilson Uwujaren said that the convict pleaded guilty to the offence during his arraignment.

As a result of the plea, the prosecution counsel urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Orji convicted Okotie for romance scam and sentenced him to 6 months in jail with an option of a N1,000 fine.

Okotie was also ordered to forfeit the same of N200,000 being proceeds of the crime, to the Federal Government.
