The Labor Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stated that Late President Yar’Adua is the only leader in Nigeria’s history that has ever done what he did by leaving the treasury richer than he met it. .
Obi said this while responding to allegations of investing state funds into his personal business while he was the governor of Anambra State.
The former governor, during a radio interview with Rufai Oseni, debunked claims that he stole from the coffers of the Anambra state government.
According to him, he had the opportunity to take money while he was in power but he refused. The former PDP Vice Presidential aspirant said that: “no criminal leaves what he can steal.”
He said he left almost a N100 billion when he was leaving office, he said that for that alone, “In any other country, I’d have the highest award. I’d have the queen’s award in the UK. Show me one governor apart from Yar’Adua that left N5 billion ! All they leave is debts.”
He noted that he left 100 billion naira in the government account and never borrowed a dime, adding that nobody in power has ever been able to achieve this feat.
He lamented that people who loot unfortunately get celebrated. Obi also lamented that most leaders leave their states in debt by the end of their tenure.
