Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi has thrown his weight behind the nationwide #EndSARS protests.
He hailed the youth for demanding an end to injustice and police brutality and he feels joy about it.
In a tweet monitored by Channels TV on Monday, the monarch said that “the EndSARS movement has brought nothing but joy to me. Finally the youth are awake.
He recalled how his own 25-year-old daughter was unlawfully detained by the operatives:
The Director of Media to the Ooni, Comrade Moses Olafare confirmed the traditional ruler’s message to newsmen on Monday.
He however, pleaded with the protesters to make their demands known in a peaceful manner saying that he is optimistic that :this is the beginning of greater things to come in Nigeria.”
The Monarch promised to see to the release of detained protesters advising the police officers that the agitations are also for their own good.
According to him, “to the men and women of the Nigerian police force, be assured that this movement is also for you.
“We know you are humans also and your reality is as a result of your environment.”
He recalled how his daughter was almost killed by the SARS operatives on her way to the airport when she was “terribly ransacked and surrounded by fully armed plain-clothed policemen in a bus, detained for close to 30 minutes of thorough questioning. “
“Imagine a young female for that matter, all belongings completely searched all because she was with a laptop on an official assignment from her office in Lagos.
I can only imagine the countless ones that have lost their lives from such ordeals, may their souls rest in peace.”
