The monarch whose topic is on many a Nigerian’s lips at the moment, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi has revealed his reason for marrying many wives.
The 1st class monarch made the revelation during his 48th birthday and 7th coronation anniversary.
Oba Enitan Ogunwusi explained that he tried making some changes but he was unable to.
His disclosure is perceived by many to be his concerted efforts since mounting the throne, to keep only one queen but have a retinue of concubines.
Explaining his constraints, the monarch said he was compelled to adhere to tradition of Ile Ife and the heritage he acquired as king.
According to him “This institution is bigger than me, beyond me. People in this palace are more than 800, they are close to a thousand. There are some people who have been living in this palace for more than 60 years, while some have lived here for more than 80 years old. Some people are over 100 years old in this palace.
“If I had my way, I tried to challenge it but it blew in my face but thank God I’m still alive. It’s an institution that is rich in heritage, culture, and tradition.”
Nonetheless, it is obvious the revered Oba is a one-wife-man as he has been seen at social events only with his current senior wife, Mariam Anako.
She is also the only Olori that he held an after-wedding party with.
