One of the groups supporting calls for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to contest the 2023 presidential election has stated that they are not bothered by the decision of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to declare his ambition for the 2023 race.
The chairman of the Public Opinion Leaders Group, a unit of The Progressive Project (TPP), one of the groups rooting for Osinbajo, Shettima Umar Abba Gana said it is the beauty of democracy for many aspirants to express interest in a position.
He added that they will not be shelving their calls for the sitting Vice President to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari just because Tinubu has declared his own ambition.
Speaking further, Gana said that in as much as Osinbajo has not commissioned them to campaign for him, neither has he openly declared interest in the race, he remains their choice as the next president.
He stated that every other person has the right to support his/her preferred candidate as well.
According to Gana, “What is happening is democracy, he (Bola Tinubu) wants to run, we want our one man (Osinbajo) to run. That is the beauty of democracy; we want our man to come out because we believe he has some good qualities.
“Bola Tinubu also has some qualities, let them all come out; democracy cannot be only one aspirant, let them all come out, that is democracy.
“Osinbajo did not tell us to come out and campaign for him. We came together on our own and want him to come out and contest and we’re hoping that he will come out because he is a very good candidate.
“In a democracy, everybody has his own opinion, his own wish and his own vote. Let them come out and let us go to the field.
“Ours is that this man is good, let him come out and we will support him. What we are doing has nothing to do with Bola Tinubu coming out or not, let him come out and let everyone that wants come out. It’s a democracy, that is not a problem.”
