Outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing has expressed regrets that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disappointed many Nigerians with the processandoutcome of the 2023 general elections.

She also reiterated the caveat of her country’s government which stated that Nigerian politicians who violated human rights or perpetrated violence during the 2023 election will be punished.

Fielding an interview with Symfoni, Laing stated that there might be a visa ban for such politicians or other sanctions would be instituted as punishment for the act.

She also called out the Independent National Electoral Commission for failing to deliver on its promise of ensuring that election results are viewed by Nigerians in real time.

Laing said this created room to manipulate results and also affected INEC’s credibility as it left voters suspecting the results announced by the commission.
