The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) caused a stir on Thursday with the declaration that it doesn’t know how much or amount of new naira notes it has printed.
The CBN Deputy Governor in charge of Financial Stability, Aisha Ahmad who represented the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said this when she appeared before members of the House of Representatives.
The lawmakers had summoned the CBN to explain the poor circulation of the new naira notes which were officially released on December 15, 2022.
She was also expected to brief the House on the apex bank’s cashless policy and cash withdrawal limits.
But fielding questions from the lawmakers, Ahmad declared the apex bank is not aware of how much of the newly printed naira notes have been made.
Her submission caused a rowdy session among the lawmaker in the Green Chamber of the House.
The CBN had recently introduced new N100, N200, N500 and N1,000 notes.
Details soon…
