Nigerians have expressed outrage as lawmaker proposes giving guns to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials.
Chairman of the FRSC in the House of Representatives, Akinfolarin Mayowa had said that it was necessary to arm the officials to enable them effectively carry out their duties.
Mayowa made the statement when he appeared before the National Assembly to defend the 2021 budget.
According to him, he would need to have a special meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha to discuss the issue further.
He also promised to write a letter to the President to implement the initiative especially as the “the 1992 Act of the FRSC allowed the corps to bear arms.”
Nigerians expressed outrage especially as the SARS unit of the Police Force only just got disbanded and wounds of the extra judicial killings by the operatives have not yet healed.
Many believe that giving guns to the FRSC officials is an attempt by the sponsors of the initiative to bring SARS back through the backdoor.
The opinion was variously discussed on the micro-blogging website, Twitter yesterday.
Already, without arms, the @FRSCNigeria officials have been reported to manhandle motorists. Some have been seen to be blatantly violent.
Giving them guns or any kind of arms will, according to Nigerians, result in unhindered brutality against unarmed motorists.
