Panic As Lagos WellMed Healthcare Laboratory Workers Contract Covid19

Panic has gripped staff and customers of the WellMed Healthcare Laboratory workers as several workers have tested positive for covid19.

Five workers of the laboratory located in the Ajah area of the Lekki Peninsular came down with the disease sending patients and staff into panic mode.

The facility is one of these accredited for covid19 testing in Lagos State.

Sadly, reports say that since getting the accreditation, the management has failed to fumigate the premises therefore, exposing staff and the public to the deadly virus.

Reports say that a husband of one of the victims stormed the laboratory facility on Tuesday to accuse the management of negligence.

A staff of the Healthcare laboratory also allege that the management curiously ordered a worker who was confirmed to have contracted the disease to report to work.

According to her, “The issue is that most of the staff tested positive and they refused to disinfect the place. I am aware that 5 people who tested positive this week were asked to stay at home.

“But I discovered that one of those who tested positive was around today (Wednesday). She tested positive yesterday (Tuesday), but was asked to come to work so she could put another nurse through.

“Other workers that want to test, they are telling them it’s not possible, and if they want to do it, they will pay 50% of the price.

“The management has not mentioned that they will shut the place even if it is for a week or a few days for fumigation. What they did today (Wednesday) was just change the working hours.”

Another worker said that “Presently, many have tested positive for #COVID19 and were still being mandated to come to work everyday.

“In a matter like this, many people would have been in contact with those that tested positive and if we are not careful, we pray it does not go beyond what we don’t expect.

“This is making people to panic and it’s getting out of hand. Many people are sick. If the management can just fumigate this place for 2 days, we’ll be fine.

“We can’t just put our lives at risk for nothing. The whole place has not been fumigated since workers tested positive.”

The staff who prefers to remain anonymous adds that “The management knows what to do. They tested these staff.

“I just feel that maybe because of the money they generate from the covid19 test, they don’t want to shut down.

“Since workers tested positive, everybody is scared. We are suspected one another because we don’t know who and who are now infected.

“Im feeling sick now and I’m sure it I take the test, I might test positive and this can’t continue. We have families at home.”

WellMed Healthcare Laboratory facility manager, Dr Belema Uduje confirmed that indeed some of their workers tested positive for coronavirus but they have been isolated.

According to her, “The ones that tested positive were told to isolate so they left work that same day when the results came out.

“Others that are were negative are at the centre. The centre is sterilised everyday whether or not we have a negative case or a positive case.”
