A 2023 Presidential aspirant of the Labour Party, Prof Pat Utomi, on Monday, stepped down in support of the presidential ambition of former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.

While giving reasons for his decision, Utomi said he was stepping down for a younger aspirant with the capacity to effect the needed change in the Nigerian system.

The event took place at the party’s presidential primary in Asaba, Delta State.

Joseph Faduri, another aspirant who had earlier made his speech, returned to the podium to also step down for Peter Obi.

The former governor of Anambra State withdrew from the Peoples Democratic Party last week to join the Labour Party.

Obi while stating his reason for resigning from the main opposition party said he did so because the events leading to the emerging primaries at that time were at variance with his beliefs.

The presidential aspirant said, “I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family.”
