Presidential aspirant and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday revealed that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi could have been his running mate if he joined his party.
The former Governor of Kano State made this claim in an interview on Channels Television.
Speculations were however, rife that Obi might join NNPP following the presidential campaign poster spotted online showing Obi and Kwankwaso as the candidate of the party.
It later became obvious that Obi was not ready to be a running mate in the 2023 presidential election when joined the Labour Party where he emerged as the presidential candidate of the party.
Obi joined the LP after announcing the resignation of his membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
When asked if Obi was approached about joining NNPP, former Governor of Kano State said he discussed national issues with Obi a few days before he joined LP.
He said, “Well, actually, we had the opportunity to talk to ourselves on many national issues until a few days to the time when he declared for the Labour Party of which now he is the presidential candidate.
“I wish him well and I wish all other presidential candidates well. I’m sure this (presidential election) will be decided by the people across the country who are going to vote on 25th February 2023.”
Kwankwaso added that many people suggested the idea the idea of Peter Obi becoming his running.
The former Governor said, “Many people just suggested that. I believe that it could have been possible if not because him to join another party. Now, he is already a candidate as we have seen on the news now. We look forward to seeing what happens in the next few weeks.{sic}”
