Alleged plots to impeach Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has been stalled as the state’s Chief Judge, Simeon Amadi, announced plans to take a one-year leave for recess.
This is coming amidst the ongoing crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly which had seen ousted 27 lawmakers and Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, reinstated.
The lawmakers, who were initially sacked for defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), were last week reinstated by the Supreme Court’s ruling.
With the lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, the tenure of Fubara tend to be on the brink with growing speculations of possible impeachment by the Assembly.
However, the plan by the Chief Judge to embark on a one-year currently stand as a stumbling block against Fubara’s impeachment.
According to report, the impeachment process will require the Chief Judge to sign the official documents to formalize the proceedings.
In the absence of the Chief Judge, only the governor has the constitutional power to appoint an Acting Chief Judge, which further stalls any potential efforts for impeachment.
