Security operatives comprising the Police and DSS operatives have taken over the Rivers State House of Assembly complex following an explosion and fire outbreak in the facility.
An explosion rocked the facility on Sunday night, with some properties in the chamber said to have been destroyed by the fire that ensued.
Reports say that the incident occurred when some suspected arsonists threw an explosive into the complex around 9:30pm on Sunday, thereby causing a fire outbreak in the assembly building.
This comes amidst rumours of alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, over his clash with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
It was learned that arrangements had been concluded by some lawmakers to first impeach the Majority leader, Eddison Ehie, to pave the way for Fubara’s removal.
However, according to Leadership, more than 50 security operatives drawn from the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken over the Assembly Complex and the entire street of the legislative building.
The security operatives have advised motorists and other road users, on Monday morning, to use alternative routes to their destinations.
No less than 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) were stationed at the entrance and surroundings of the assembly complex.
