The Nigeria Police Force has reacted through its spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, after an Abuja-based pastor, Uche Aigbe stormed church service on Sunday, February 12, 2023, carrying an AK-47 rifle.
The incident is said to have taken place during the second service, which normally has a high turnout of the congregation from different parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
The clergyman had boldly walked the pulpit while carrying a gun and many members of his congregation were bewildered by the action.
An unflinching Aigbe walked up to the lectern, aware of the tension his action had created, without looking at his worshippers.
But as he made attempt to open his Bible, the preacher looked up and said teasingly, “Some people are looking for my trouble. And I came here prepared.“
However, some Nigerians kicked against it and reached out to the Police Spokesman on Twitter, saying it is illegal for him to carry a weapon.
In a post via his Twitter page, Adejobi said the video has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Police at the FCT.
He stated that the clergyman will have a case to answer as no one is authorized to bear arms except an officer of the law.
He said: “I have forwaded to the CP FCT to act pls. Thanks But if its true, the pastor will have a case to answer. AK47? It falls under prohibited firearms in Niger and no one bears it except an officer of the law and not all of them have the right, selected sec operatives, but no individual has the right to bear it.”
