Policemen Flee as Okada Riders Attack Barracks

There was pandemonium in a part of Akure, the Ondo State Capital on Wednesday as policemen are reported to have fled after commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders stormed their barracks.

The incident followed a clash between both parties on Wednesday when the Okada riders stormed the Division A Barracks prompting the policemen and families scampering to safety, with some scaling the barracks fence.

An eyewitness narrated that trouble started when a driver knocked down and killed an Okada rider and his passenger around Arakele area.

The incident sparked a protest by the riders who demanded justice for their colleague.

Unfortunately, the shot hit and killed another Okada rider who was one of the protesters. The accidental shot sparked more anger among the riders who made to attack the officer.

The latter fled to Division A Barracks for safety and a whole massive crowd of colleagues of the deceased chased him.

On arriving the barrack, the riders launched an attack on Division A barrack, breaking the gate and hurling stones at policemen.

They set up bonfires in front of the location and made to burn down the facility insisting on seeing the officer who killed the Okada rider.

When contacted, the state police command spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami said she was to receive any report on the incident.
