2023 Presidential Aspirant and former aide to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Doyin Okupe has apologised to the Igbos about his comments on a possible Igbo presidency.
Okupe had on Saturday, alleged that the North had not forgiven the Igbos about the events that led to the 1966 coup.
The coup d’etat resulted in the death of many notable people including the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.
Okupe said in his tweet that the North still believes that the coup was an Igbo coup and will not, for that reason support any Presidential candidate of Igbo extraction.
According to him, “A national consensus for Igbo Presidency cannot evolve until the core North forgives the Igbos for the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto by Nigerian soldiers of Igbo extraction in the 1966 coup.”
The backlash to Doyin Okupe’s comment came in torrents as many accused him of lacking knowledge of the events of the 1966 coup and the reason Igbos are marginalised.
Some referred to an interview by the late Sardauna while others point Okupe to the fact that tens of thousands of Igbos were killed in the civil war that ensured.
Many others told Dr Okupe that the coup executors were people from every part of the country including the core north.
A better informed @doyinokupe thereafter tendered a public apology to the Igbos saying that, “I never intended to hurt or demean the Igbos. Instead I wanted to help actualise d dream.”
