Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen held sway yesterday in the Owerri – Enugu -Okigwe highway where they robbed and kidnapped travellers and students of the Abia State University (ABSU).
Reports say the armed men also kidnapped an unspecified number of students of Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu, and robbed many motorists who were headed to Abia State.
A source reports the incident happened around Ihube in Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State. The gunmen arrived shooting aimlessly in the air and hit 4 of the students.
One of the students died instantly while the others with varying degrees of injuries are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
They were all aged between 10 and 16The student of the secondary school are aged between 14 and 16.
Passengers and motorists are reported to have run into the gunmen unexpectedly.
The spokesman for the Imo State Police Command, Michael Abattam confirmed the incident but said that it was a robbery attack and not kidnapping as claimed by members of the public.
He said that investigations are on to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
