Nigerian doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors NARD), today, 1st of April commenced a nationwide strike in spite of their meeting with the Federal Government.
The Federal Government had on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the National association of Resident Doctors ahead of the planned 1st of April, 2021 strike action.
The Memorandum was signed after the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, who, himself is a medical doctor met with the leadership of the Association.
During the meeting which lasted more than seven hours, both parties deliberated on the issues raised by the aggrieved doctors in their notice of Trade Dispute including the non-payment of salaries of some house officers, non-recruitment of house officers, abolishment of bench fees for doctors undergoing training in other hospitals, non-payment of minimum wage and hazard allowances.
The resident doctors argued that the strike does not aim to punish Nigerians but to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari whose responsibilities is to care for Nigerians among other duties.
Speaking to Channels Television this afternoon, President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Dr Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi confirmed that the strike commenced by 8:00am today, Thursday, 1st April.
He said that all NARD members have been asked to join the strike immediately. He said that the doctors are “used to memoranda of understanding for over a decade now, and we insist that the implementation of what we wrote on our strike notice should be implemented immediately…We are doing it for all health workers.”
The Resident Doctors added that:
“Nigerians must understand that we love them and the strike is not intended to hurt them but to challenge the Nigerian government @MBuhari@Fmohnigeria@LabourMinNG whose responsibilities amongst others is to care for her citizens and labour force to do the needful. #IstanWithNARD“
The Resident Doctors strike comes 2 days after President Muhammadu Buhari traveled out to the UK for medical check up.
