A Catholic priest, Reverend Father. Raymond Ifeanyi Eselu, has died in an auto crash in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The accident occurred in front of St.Theresa’s Cathedral, Abakaliki, on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.
The priest was said to be driving out of the church after attending the funeral of his colleagues, Rev Fr Christopher Nnachi Agwu.
Until his death, Eselu was the parish priest of St Patrick’s parish Ezza-Ofu in Ebonyi state.
Anthony Nwizi summarised Rev. Fr. Raymond Ifeanyi Eselu’s personality. He said:
“FARE THEE WELL FR. BIGBOY-RAY
“Rev. Fr. Raymond was a jolly good fellow. I never knew him earlier before 1996/97. He had been in SPY a year ahead of me but I rounded up and stepped aside for him and others to fill the limited vacancies in the prestigious Pontificia Università Urbaniana (Rome) for Philosophy 1, that academic session.
“He was never caught frowning. He was never at loggerheads with any son of man.
“Fr. Ray was loved by all that came across him. He was an examplary priest, dedicated to his service to God and mankind.
“Ovungwongwo was my friend. He made 1st Class in all his academic degrees.
“May he enjoy the full benefits of the sacrifices he has made for the purpose of the Kingdom.
“Smile home, Rev. Fr. Raymond Ifeanyi Eselu, till we meet again.“
The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki on Thursday August 18, announced the sudden demise of the priest.
A statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Mathew Uzoma Opoke, described Eselu as a jovial and dedicated priest who took delight in the celebration of Mass.
The statement read: “We are hopeful that God, for who, he served, would prepare a banquet full of good things for the one who has served in his vineyard in so remarkable a manner. We ask for your prayers for his eternal repose after his meritorious service. The funeral rite will be announced later.”
The Catholic Diocese of Abakiliki has also issued a statement announcing the demice of the much love priest.
