Lai Mohammed has threatened to sanction CNN over its documentary on the #LekkiShooting by government security operatives on the 20th of October.
Speaking at a press briefing today in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture described the reportage as “fake and a disservice to journalism profession.”
He said that CNN goofed when it said that soldiers shot and killed unarmed youth protesters.
He added that the media group relied heavily on unverified and possibly doctored videos saying that the footages were obtained from questionable sources.
According to Lai Mohammed, “Like everyone else, I watched the CNN report and I must tell you that it reinforces the disinformation that is going around.
“It is blatantly irresponsible and a poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news organisation.
“CNN engaged in incredible sensationalisation and did a great disservice to itself and journalism.
“In the first instance, CNN, which touted itself as an exclusive investigative report, sadly relied on the same videos that have been circulating on social media without verification.
“This is very serious and CNN should be sanctioned for that.
According to Mohammed, non of the CNN reporters was at the scene of the shooting. They only relied on second-hand information that have not been authenticated.
“Were CNN reporters and cameramen at the Lekki Toll Gate that evening ?
If the answer is No, on what basis are they reporting ? Relying on on second or their hand information and presenting it as ‘CNN investigation’ ?
Is this what is expected of from an international media organisation or any serious news organisation ?”
