Sanwo-Olu Reveals Identity of Officers Who Shot at Protesters, Sets Up Judicial Panel

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed the identity of Police officers who shot at #ENDSARS protesters in Surulere.

He also set up a seven-man Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution to investigate cases of brutality and human rights violations committed by men of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Lagos State.

He made the announcement during a live address at the State House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu the names of the SARS officers as:

  1. Bagou Michael
  2. Ekpoudom Etop
  3. Nnamdi Madura
  4. Akinyemi Benson

The governor’s action forms part of steps being taken by the state government to address the 5-poit demands of the youths protesting the SARS brutality.

The panel is headed by retired Justice Doris Okuwobi and has 6 months to thoroughly investigate all claims of abuse and fatalities arising from the police action.

Other members of the panel are:

  • Mr Ebun Adebgoruwa (SAN), representing the civil society
  • Taiwo Lakanu, (Rtd) Deputy Inspector General of Police, representing the civil society
  • Miss Patience Udoh, representing the civil society
  • Mr Segun Awosanya, Human Rrights Activist
  • Mrs Odusanya, Director Civil Litigation in Lagos State Mediation Centre

The panel also comprises 3 members of a civil society organisation, 1 member representing a security agency and 1 representing the government.

A slot has been created for the youths to send a nominee. This is left to the youths as they insist they have no leader.

The Human Rights Commission is expected to nominate one representative before the panel sitting commences next week.

According to the Governor, “a 7-member Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for victims of SARS-related abuses in Lagos is now being constituted.

“This panel will ensure that all those with verifiable cases of SARS brutality or fatality get justice and receive compensation. The panel will be chaired by retired Justice Doris Okuwobi.”

A N200 million fund has also been set aside to be utilised by the panel. The funds will be disbursed as compensation to victims of police brutality at the discretion of the panel.

A call centre will be set up for use the panel going forward.
