Dr. Dípò Awójídé@OgbeniDipo· The dangerous trajectory that this country is going on, it’s looking like there is no way back. This is really serious. Almost every day you wake up to some scary news. 1,500 inmates freed in Imo. Police Command Headquarters in Owerri attacked. What exactly is going on?

Step-by-step account of how it is reported to have happened:

Gunmen arrived the correctional facility at about 02:00am on Monday in several Hilux vans and Sienna busses armed with sophisticated weapons.

They alighted and engaged security personnel on duty in a dare-devil “fierce gun battle.”

They blew up the administrative block with explosives and then gained entrance into the yard.

Next was the entrance where they detonated another explosive.

The gunmen then threw open the jail gates and ordered all inmates to leave.

Acting Controller-General of Corrections, John Mrabure has however, ordered an investigation into the incident. He is also working with other security organisations to search and return all fleeing inmates.

According to public relations officer of the NCoS, the ACG has also asked all officers attached to the correctional facilities to “remain vigilant at this trying moment in our history.”

So far, 6 inmates have voluntarily retuned to the facility while 35 refused to escape when they were set free.
