Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe has reported Ghana to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding its continued clamp down on Nigerians and Nigerian businesses in that country.
He condemned the attack on Nigerian traders by Ghana, an action he regretted in view of the fact that Nigeria considers itself an ally of the West African nation.
The spokesperson to the Senate Minority Leader, Uchenna Awom likened the attacks on Nigerians by the Ghanaian authorities to xenophobia.
Ghana recently locked up shops belonging to Nigerians with an order to pay $1 million each as stipulated by the country’s laws before the businesses can reopen.
According to Abaribe the action of Ghana negates the protocols that exist between the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) member states. He therefore prayed the regional body to call Ghana to order since its actions have far reaching implications.
In his words, “So what’s the point of having an economic community if at the end of the day, each country resolves to make laws and regulations that are in contradiction with the binding protocol.
“This is quite absurd as it negates the spirit that propelled the formation of ECOWAS in the first place.”
