Senate President, Ahmed Lawan has has sponsored the wedding of 300 vulnerable women in Yobe State.
The speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Ahmed Lawan Mirwa who represented the Senate President confirmed the gesture. He said the mass wedding was aimed at supporting indigent families.
He also added that the wedding and unions would discourage social vices such as rape, child abandonment and child abuse. In addition it aims to and give both men and women a sense of responsibility knowing that they have dependants to cater for and so need to tone down on social vices.
The coordinator of the event, who is also the Commissioner, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, said ta all the brides were were sent off to their new homes with beds and furniture while the husbands were given N30,000 each for bride price.
The grooms will also undertake various skills that would empower them to take care of their families.
The wedding took place on Saturday in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area. An initial group of of 100 spinsters had their wedding ceremony yesterday, 8th August while the rest will take place in subsequent weeks.
The rest of the programme will cover beneficiaries from the remaining 4 local government areas of his constituency, Yobe North Senatorial District. They comprise Geidam, Bursari, Yunusari and Yusufari Local Government Areas.
The Senate president admonished the couples to to endeavour to resolve their matrimonial issues amicably between them and to live in peace.
