A trigger-happy soldier has allegedly shot and killed a 28-year-old man, Chinonso Obasi in Isiukwuato Local Government Area of Abia State for blocking his way.
The incident is said to have occurred on the 3rd of January, 2022.
The Punch reports that the soldier, who invaded the community along with his colleagues, accused the deceased of blocking his path.
However, it is alleged that Chinonso stood up tp make way for the armed men but one of them shot him in the head.
Evangelist Ugochukwu Kingsley Bassey, a relative of the deceased maintained that his cousin was shot without provoking the soldiers.
According to Evangelist Ugochukwu Kingsley Bassey:
“My younger cousin brother just shot dead by a berseck military man without any fight nor provocations @ Ovum isikwuato LGA around 21Hour some minutes on 3rd Jan.2022, and I must commend the professionalism exhibited by the Commanding Officer of Nigerian Army School of Languages Ovim for his human face and not trying to cover up evil.
“Justice must be done and must not seem to be done!!!Although my brother’s life can never be recovered again.“
Eric Dwyse Ikwuagwu, another witness who gave a different account of the incident, said that Obasi refused to give up his seat for the officers at a bar.
According to him, “A soldier of the Nigerian Army attached to a very top former military brass killed Mr. Chinonso Obasi, a youth of Amune community, who was resident in Umuahia until his senseless murder yesterday’s evening, the 3rd of January 2022.
“The ugly incident happened at the popular oriendo market in Ovim. Eye witness account has it that the deceased was ordered to vacant his seat at a drinking bar for the trigger happy Orderly.
“The deceased who refused to give up his seat and questioned the reason for such unnecessary high-handedness was shot immediately by this army personnel who was not even on uniform when the incident happened. This careless murder must not be swept under the carpet no matter who he is attached to as security Orderly. No life is more precious than another.”
A military source who confirmed the incident said they were investigating the incident while the state Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna also said investigations are ongoing.
