Abidemi Rufai, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor of Ogun State,Dapo Abiodun has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in New York, United States for defrauding scores of people of $650 million (N312 billion).

The sums are said to be part of unemployment benefit funds meant for US residents during the Covid9 pandemic in 2020. Rufai is reported to have been apprehended in New York on Friday when he attempted to flee the US.

He was subsequently arraigned in court on Saturday on charges of using the identities of more than 100 Washington residents to fraudulently receive over $350,000 in unemployment benefits from the Washington State Employment Security Department.

Reports also say that Abidemi Rufai was fingered to have used Alia, Sandy Tang linked to unemployment programmes fraud in the US cities of Hawai, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Nigerians have taken to social media to berate fraudulent politicians who flaunt their wealth in public to intimidate hardworking and sincere citizens.
