Feminist Coalition, the group at the forefront of the #EndSARS campaign has announced that it has stopped receiving donations.
The not-for-profit organisation also enjoins supporters of the movement to stay indoors and obey all government imposed curfew in their various states.
Part of the objectives of the group is “fighting injustice through peaceful protests, fundraising and social media.”
The movement started with the goal of ending the brutality and extra-judicial killings by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Nigerian Police.
The organisers say it received a total of N147.8 million in cash donations in favour of the #EndSARS protests.
They say the money was raised “through the generosity of concerned Nigerians, well-meaning people and concerned Nigerians who want their voices heard and their demands to be met.”
According to the organisers, it made a decision to “stop all donation inflows for the #EndSARS peaceful protest.”
Speaking further, the group said that the “rest of the donations will go towards funding medical emergencies, legal aid for wrongfully detained citizens, and relief for victims of police brutality and families of the deceased.”
They made the announcement on Thursday in a statement titled, “A Statement from the Feminist Coalition.”
Signatories include: Ozzy Etomi, Damilola Odufuwa, Layo Ogunbanwo, Odunayo Eweniyi, Fakhrriyya Hashim, Oluwaseun Osowobi, FK Abudu, Kiki Mordi, Tito Ovia, Obiageli Alintah, Lila Johnson-Salami, Karo Omu.
The statement:
“The past two weeks have been tough for many Nigerians, most especially the last 2 days.
“Many lives have been lost and properties destroyed at the height of what started as peaceful marches for the end to police brutality.
“The Feminist Coalition condols with every Nigerian mother, father, son, daughter who has lost a loved one in these trying times
“These Nigerians share the same vision for a better country as we all do and should be duly recognised as hero.
“Following the President’s address, we hereby encourage all young Nigerians to stay safe, stay home and observe the mandated curfew in your state.
“The Feminist Coalition has made a decision to henceforth stop all donation inflows for the #EndSARS Protest peaceful protest.
The rest of the donations will go towards funding medical emergencies, legal aid for wrongfully detained citizens and relief for victims of police brutality and families of the deceased.
“Here is a summary of the total funds we received and disbursed (in Naira) over the past 14 days:
“Total received = N147,855,788.28 (includes donations in USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, GHS, KES and BTC).
“Total disbursed = N60,403,235.00
“Total left = N87,425,553.28
We wish to emphasise that we will no longer be accepting donations for #EndSARS going forward.”
