International tennis star, Serena Williams has declared support for her longtime friend, Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry.
This is coming on the heels of Markle’s revelation that the racial discrimination she faced as a black spouse to Britain’s Prince Harry made her nurse suicidal thoughts.
Markle said that lack of support from “The Firm” as the royal institution is called made her feel worthless and explore the option of suicide.
In an interview on Sunday with Oprah, Meghan, “I was ashamed to admit it to Harry but I knew if I didn’t say it, I would do it.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. It was clear, it was real, it was frightening and it was a constant thought.”
Serena took to her Instagram page to pen her thoughts for a friend she describes as “truly noble.”
Married herself to a white social media entrepreneur and founder of ‘Reddit’, Serena said she wants her “daughter and Meghan’s daughter to live in a “society that is driven by respect.”
For Serena Williams, marriage to a white man is what she least expected considering her battles with racism throughout her career.
She however admits that love knows no colour or race.
Her Instagram post about Markle:
“Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion. She teaches me everyday what it means to be truly noble.
“Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced. I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of colour to minimise us, to break us down and demonise us.
“We must recognise our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip nd tabloid journalism. The mental health and consequences of systemic oppression and victimisation are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.
“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect. Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Serena then reassures Meghan Markle that, “I am so proud of you for being so brave. I know it is never easy. You are strong- both you and Harry. I love you. I adore you. Your friend S”
