An angry mob in Cross River State on Saturday morning, burnt to death men suspected to be armed robbers.
The suspected criminals were apprehended and burnt to death while attempting to carry out a robbery operation in the Ikot Ansa community of Calabar.
Two of the suspects were set ablaze on the spot, on Saturday morning on Mayne Avenue in Calabar South Local Government Area.
On Saturday morning also, at about the same time, another armed robber was reportedly caught in Ikot Ansa.
A vigilante group immediately set him ablaze immediately.
Confirming the incident to Daily Post, a resident identified as John Akpan said the suspect was a member of a 3-man gang which robbed a house in the neighbourhood but luck ran out on him.
According to him, two others escaped the jungle justice. Reports say that the remains of the criminal were left for all to see as at the time of this report.
“The boy is suspected to be in his teen. He was in a group of three armed robbers who came to rob our neighbourhood at about 1 am this Saturday.
“He was caught by some vigilante group while the other two escaped and left him,” the eyewitness was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo said she was not aware of the incident but cautioned against jungle justice, saying the law is against it.
She said; “We have usually cautioned against what is called jungle justice. All criminals must always be handed over to the law enforcement agencies for prosecution.”
