The police in Benin City, the Edo State capital have arrested one of the suspected rapists who murdered 22-year old Student of the University of Benin, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
Omozuwa was raped, brutally injured and killed by her assailants who have been on the run. The incident took place in the church hall of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Benin City.
The gory assault sparked outrage across all strata of the Nigerian society with everyone calling on law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are dealt justice. International bodies like the Amnesty International and the International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) also petitioned the police to ensure justice is done.
Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on Monday, deployed forensic and criminal investigation experts to Benin City to ensure speedy investigations.
Police spokesman in the state, Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the arrest of the suspect. According to him, fingerprints left on the fire extinguisher was used to kill Omozuwa was used to trace the suspected rapist after forensic examination .
In his words, “the item used in the assault, which was a fire extinguisher, was recovered, immediately the operatives who were with some specialists screened the finger prints which led to our suspect.
