Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami has ordered the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to suspend the recent increase in the license fees slammed on logistics services.
With the cover19 lockdown and social distancing measures, many businesses and individuals have relied on dispatch riders and logistics companies to move their supplies.
The new order on license fees would indeed cripple all the arrangements, collapse the businesses and force SMEs to shut down completely.
The announcement of the increase was posted on Friday by several Nigerians and in particular, Drs Dipo Awojide and Joe Abah. They both appealed to the Minister and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to save thousands of #MSMEs jobs threatened by the new directive.
According to Dr. Dípò Awójídé @OgbeniDipo,
“please block this needless policy by Nipost that will cripple thousands of small businesses. Thousands of young people have created their own jobs and are trying to just survive. This will kill thousands of #MSMEs. Please don’t let it happen. Counting on you sir.”
Have you considered the effect of the @NipostNgn Courier Licence requirements on the digital economy, small business and self employment? It appears to go against your vision. I would like to understand the logic please. Thanks.”
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy swiftly responded on Saturday that his office would investigate the increase.
He also requested NIPOST to suspend the increased logistics license fees as it was not in the plans of the ministry.
Isa Ali Pantami, PhD @DrIsaPantami’s responses:
, our attention has been drawn to an increase of licence fee, which was not part of the regulation I earlier APPROVED for you. Your Chair and PMG were YESTERDAY contacted to put the implementation on hold and send a report to our ministry by Monday. Best wishes!”
