This comes after the group took over power, following the exit of the US military as well as its exiled president, Ashraf Ghani.

Speaking through its spokesman, the Taliban said that “there will be no issue about women’s rights.” This is in spite of widespread concern about the highhanded treatment meted out to them.

Women groups are also staging protests across the the country, demanding better treatment.

In an interview with Fox News on Friday, September 3, Suhail Shaheen said he is opposed to Western views that “women should have an education without hijab.”

“That is a change of culture… our culture …they can receive education with hijab. They can work with hijab.”

Giving insights about a future relationship with the US, Shaheen said that, “We should be focussing how we can work together in a positive and constructive way which is in the best interest of both sides.

“There will be no issue about women’s rights. No problem about their education, their work. But we should not be after changing each other’s culture as we are not intending to change your culture, you should not be changing our culture.”

The Taliban leader described the exit of the US and allied military forces from Afghanistan as the closure of one chapter of the country’s history and the beginning of another.

In his interview with Fox News, Shaheen said that, “We (Taliban) have closed one chapter. For us, it was occupation. We ended that, we are staging resistance. But now it is closed. It is past. We have to focus on the future that is better for them and us.”

There are reports that an interim government comprising only Taliban members will soon be inaugurated.

It will be made up of 25 ministries and a consultative council of a dozen muslim scholars.
