During the recent nationwide protest against economic hardship in Nigeria, a video showed protesters looting rice in Edo State.
Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication in Edo State, has clarified some confusion about the rice in the video.
In an interview with Channels TV, Nehikhare said that the rice shown being looted did not come from the federal government. He it was purchased by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other religious organizations. He said these groups had received 1 billion naira from the Edo State government to help distribute rice to people in need.
In Nehikhare’s words: “Edo State government did not buy any rice, the rice you saw in that video that was being looted is the rice purchased by CAN, the religious bodies who are the ones distributing rice after they received the sum of 1 billion naira from Edo State government. That is the rice you saw, not federal government rice, not Edo State government rice”
