Nigeria’s longest bridge, the Third Mainland Bridge is to be totally shut again for another 72 hours.
The Federal Government is the shut down will allow for another round of replacement of expansion joints.
The bridge will be shut from 12:00 midnight Friday the 29th to 12:00 midnight, Monday, February 1.
Federal Controller of works, Engineer Olukayode Popoola made the announcement on Wednesday.
He said that the construction had reached the stage for casting additional three expansion joints, hence the need to stop every form of traffic that could cause vibrations.
Popoola added that the 72-hour closure would allow for proper setting of the concrete during the casting process to make the rehabilitation works more durable.
He appealed for the cooperation and understanding of motorists and Lagos residents.
According to him, “Messrs Boroni Prono is planning to cast three number expansion joints on Saturday 30th and Sunday, 31st. We are sorry for the inconveniences this may cause #Lagosians.
The bridge has witnessed intermittent total and partial closures since the 24th of July 2020.
Deadline for the completion of works was impacted by the 2-week #EndSARS protests in October, 2020, according to the Works Ministry.
The closures have caused heavy traffic on other roads linking the Mainland with the Island.
