Traffic Offence: Humbled Oseni Rufai Tenders Public Apology (video)

"Gist"

Arise TV anchor and fiery critic of government and public officers’ breaches of the law, Rufai Oseni has tendered a televised public apology to Nigerians, family and friends for committing a traffic offence.

2 days ago the journalist breached the Lagos State traffic law by driving on the Bus Rapid Transport lane dedicated solely to the BRT buses.

He was accosted by law enforcement officers, his vehicle impounded and sued for the offence.

Government officials including the Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s aide soon pounced on his case and vowed to ensure he faces the wrath of the law.

The court found Oseni guilty and slammed him with a N70,000 fine which he has since paid.

Nigerians soon reacted to the speed with which government officials took their pound of flesh from a journalist that has not spared them with his criticisms.

@trgraey said: “It is amusing to watch that Ben hundeyin using Oseni Rufai to “catch cruise”. As for the police who delight in pointing guns at mere infractions but run away when faced with bandits and armed robbers .. I laugh in Greek.

Not withstanding, an obviously subdued Oseni indeed, ate the humble pie and tendered a televised public apology for all that transpired.

His apology:

Good morning viewers.

As many of you know, in the last 2 days I have been in the news for the wrong reasons. This has resulted in needless distractions for my friends, family and members of the public and for all my colleagues here on Arise News Channels.

I would therefore like to apologise to all parties over what transpired during the incident with the police when I was stopped for driving on a bus lane.

I cannot and dare not lay claim to knowing it all.

Lessons have been learnt from this entire episode and this has been a most humbling experience for me.
