Tragedy struck again as yet another explosion today killed at least 20 persons at the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos.
Many people were seriously injured while scores of buildings and cars were destroyed. The accident occurred about 3:30pm Thursday, 24th September.
A video surfaced of the moment onlookers trooping to the scene, oblivious of more looming danger when a second defining explosion cut them down before they could flee (viewer discretion advised):
Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incident to newsmen this evening.
According him, the efforts of his men with the collaboration of the Lagos State Fires Sevice, the Nigerian Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps helped to contain further devastation.
LASEMA boss said the mishap was caused by a truck laden with petroleum gas which had a lone accident resulting in the explosion. The DG also advised Lagosians to remain calm:
Dr Oke-Osanyintolu added that “the impact of the explosion led to fire on adjoining buildings and several vehicles burnt. Several persons were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.“
Eyewitnesses says many were being treated at the Iju Water Works Clinic.
