Twitter Reacts to Lifting of Suspension by Nigerian Government

Tech giant, Twitter has reacted to the lifting of the suspension of its operation by the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after 222 days.

Recall that the Buhari-led administration slammed the suspension in June 2021 over allegations that the platform was used to undermine the sovereignty and security of Nigeria.

However, on Wednesday, 12th of January, the government lifted the ban on the operations of the social media platform following a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President’s directive was announced in a statement by the Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NTIDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdulahi.

The statement added that the the approval was granted in response to a memo written to the President by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.

Reacting to the suspension of the ban via its verified Public Policy Page, Twitter commended the Buhari administration for the gesture and promised to work with the Nigerian government in developing the West African country.

The tech platform stated that it is deeply committed to Nigeria, where it is used by people for commerce, cultural engagement and civi participation.
