Two-Storey Building Collapses, K!lls Elderly Woman

An 80-year-old woman was today, November 16 k!lled when a 2-storey building collapsed on her.

The yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life instantly when the building located at number 34 Oloto Street, Borno Way, off Freeman Street, Oyingbo, Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of the state collapsed, causing a tragic impact on her.

According to Kehinde Adeboye, an eyewitness, the incident occurred around 7:45 am on Thursday, resulting in the death of the elderly woman.

Upon receiving distress calls, sympathizers and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to provide assistance and manage the situation.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed the casualty and stated there were no reports of further injuries in the unfortunate incident.

Oke-Osanyitolu mentioned that the distress calls were received at approximately 8:30 am, and the rescue team promptly arrived at 8:42 am to address the situation.

He said, “The Agency responded to distress calls concerning the above and, upon arrival, discovered a storey building in a state of partial collapse.

“Further information gathered at the incident scene revealed that an internal suspended beam in a room collapsed at about 7:45 am due to the ageing and lack of maintenance of the structure.

“Unfortunately, an old woman died from the impact of the partial collapse.”

As of the latest update at 10 am, a search and rescue operation was in progress, conducted by a joint rescue team. The scene has been cordoned off to facilitate the operation and ensure public safety.

Officials from various emergency response units, including the LASEMA Response Team, LRU, paramedics, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and Lagos Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), are actively present on the ground. Their collective efforts aim to manage the situation, provide assistance, and maintain a secure environment.

“The building has been cordoned off, and LABCA has been contacted for further action,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated
