Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has bowed to pressure following protests by students over recent tuition fee hike.

Obi has now ordered the suspension of the recent fee hike at the University.

The directive, communicated through the university’s Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, was issued on Monday and shared with the press.

After an emergency meeting on December 1, the university’s management initially approved a rise in school fees, prompting a strong reaction from students.

Their protest on Monday disrupted academic and administrative functions at the institution.

The vice chancellor said:

“The management of this institution is a listening administration.

“We want to assure the students as critical stakeholders that appropriate arrangements have been put in place through constructive engagements with the students to resolve the matter.”

“The management, however, commends the students for the mature, reasonable, and civilized manner exhibited towards resolving the matter.”
