Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Unilag Vice-Chancellor, has reacted to news of his dismissal by the University’s governing council.

The council cited financial recklessness, gross misconduct among other others.

In a statement signed by him, Wednesday, 12th August, he advised the general public to discountenance the dismissal letter signed by secretary of the council, Oladejo Azeez.

Refuting the allegations, the Vice-Chancellor said that the offences he is accused of are untrue and a figment of Azeez’s imagination.

Unilag’s leadership intrigues also has the senate representative in the governing council, Prof Olukemi Odukoya accusing the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Wale Babalakin of actualising his plans to remove the VC.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reacted to the purported removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong said in Abuja that in as much as the council has the powers to hire and fire Vice-Chancellor, the Ministry has not been briefed about the development.

The statement from the ministry also adds that due process must be followed in carrying out the function.

The statement:

“My dear colleagues, 

“The Federal Ministry of Education wishes to state that it is yet to be briefed on the developments at the university of Lagos regarding the purported removal of the VC.

“While the ministry awaits proper briefing from the university authorities, it is important to reaffirm that the council has the power to hire an fire but due process must be followed in doing so.”
