Nigeria Returns History to Nigerian Basic Education Curriculum

Unity Schools will not Participate in WAEC Exams

News - Women's Perspective

The Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu has rescinded its decision to reopen schools for final year students. According to him, Nigeria’s Unity Schools will no longer participate in the scheduled WAEC Exams.

Mr Adamu said this after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, 8th July, 2020.

According to him, no public school or place of learning under the Ministry of Education will resume until schools are confirmed safe.

Mrs Bolaji Osime, CEO of Global International College in an interview with Channels TV news, today, 8th July called for caution on the part of those pushing for the resumption of schools.

According to her, it is safer to lose a school year than lose lives. For her, Ghana and other countries may go ahead but Nigeria should take care “and err on the part of caution.”

Osime said that students generally come from different parts of the country and different homes. The children are very often able to endure #COVID19 illness arising from infection from the virus.

The students would often return home to their aged parents, most of whom are over 50 years of age and therefore most vulnerable. If infected, the parents contract the fatal disease.

While giving reasons why unity schools will not participate in WAEC exams, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu said it will be difficult to monitor or control students in spite of CCTV cameras.

He therefore advised WAEC and state governments to reconsider the decision to have students of any class return to school.
