Unknown Gunmen are said to have attacked the Obosi Police Station in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
During the attack, 2 Inspectors-General were killed while all detainees were set free. The station was thereafter, set ablaze.
The attack which took place on Wednesday, came barely 24 hours after the new Commissioner of Police, Christopher Adetokunbo Owolabi assumed office.
A source identified the deceased officers simply as James and Awalu and said they were killed inside a non-functional filling station near the police station.
The source also reports that the moment other officers on duty noticed the unusual movement of the unknown gunmen, they ran for safety while the assailants held sway.
The incident has been confirmed by the spokesman for the command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu. Tochukwu said that the Commissioner of Police has deployed a team to the scene of the incident to unravel the reason for the attack.
According to him, “The tactical team led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police was directed to have an on-on-spot assessment of the place.
The team was equally told to possibly identify and apprehend the hoodlums that perpetrated the act.“
Mr Tochukwu added that the bodies of the slain policemen have been deposited at the morgue.
