The unfolding story surrounding and personal details of the victim trafficked by the former Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu indicate that there is more about the young man than meets the eye.
David apparently knew he was going to the UK to donate his kidney to the critically ill daughter of the lawmaker but he chose to play along.
It appears he was sure he would not allow his kidney to be tampered with knowing the risks involved, his level of education notwithstanding.
Like every young adult in Nigeria, the young man dreamt of exiting the harsh realities of the country for greener pastures. Many young people his age have gone on equally wild adventures to flee biting poverty.
The adventures include willingly selling their organs, engaging in ritual killings, sleeping with animals or taking risky boat trips through dangerous oceans to the uncertainties of the Western world, Asia or the Middle East.
David enjoyed a princely lifestyle from the moment he moved to the home of Ike Ekweremadu in Abuja to the time he spent in the UK, even if he suspected the elite Nigerian’s motives.
He must have been well fed and nurtured medically to remain healthy for the purpose of his planned trip. The young man played the fool and illiterate regardless of the risk he faced. Form him, it was better than living off crumbs from the wild streets of Lagos.
The moment he got an inkling that he may be dumped, harmed or shipped back to Nigeria when his organ did not match that of the intended beneficiary, the smart Lagos urchin allegedly told the medical team that he was not aware of the intended surgery.
He is said to have gone straight out of the hospital to a police station to feign an ordeal by exploiting the indiscretion of the respected PhD holder and lawmaker.
It is obvious that academics do not always amount to total smartness or wisdom. Living on the streets shapes many for life’s realities.
Even if the Senator made good efforts to come clean by stating in his application for visa, the exact reason David, his sponsored visitor was travelling to the UK, the urchin was miles ahead having survived risks all his life.
Ekweremadu is now faced with charges bordering on forgery, exploitation, trick to cause permanent harm and trauma.
- There is forgery because the said David was purportedly not an adult as he claims he is only 15 and his date of birth in the international passport was manipulated.
- Exploitation because the Ekweramdus capitalized on his age, level of education and seeming exposure to sell him the idea of a better life overseas. Purchasing a human organ legally, normally costs a whooping fortune. The lawmaker was apparently getting it for a comparatively paltry fraction.
- Trick to cause permanent harm and trauma because the transplant could go awry and the donor may be incapacitated for the rest of his life.
David Ukpo Nwamini saw an opportunity for a better life and used the wisdom of a wild Lagos street urchin to go rogue and make the best of of his dilemma.
Three things to his advantage in this saga:
- He will get an asylum in the UK
- Get a funded education
- Live permanently outside the wild jungle back home
It is therefore, obvious a summary of David’s personal details so far that he was:
- Not 15 at the time of his trip going by the records on his BVN and passport date page
- He already had a full grown girlfriend back in Nigeria
- He had 6 bank accounts in Nigeria prior to his trip.
