US, UK, Canada, Sweden and Twitter React to Twitter Ban in Nigeria

News - Women's Perspective

The international community including the US, UK, Canada, Sweden and Twitter management itself have reacted to the latter’s ban in Nigeria.

The US government cautioned that Federal Government’s move is capable of sending the wrong signals to foreign investors.

The US added that the directive runs contrary to the fundamental human rights of Nigerian citizens and therefore, the government should have taken a different approach rather than an outright ban.

Statement by the US:

“Nigeria’s constitution provides for freedom of expression. The government recent Twitter ban undermines Nigerians’ ability to exercise this fundamental freedom and sends a poor message to its citizens, investors and businesses.

“Banning social media and curbing every citizen’s ability to seek, receive and import information undermines fundamental freedoms. As President Biden has stated, our need for individual expression, open public conversation and accountability has never been greater.

“The path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more, not less communication, alongside concerted efforts toward unity, peace and prosperity,” the US statement reads.

Twitter, speaking through Twitter Public Policy@Policy states that, “We are deeply concerned by the blocking of Twitter in Nigeria. Access to the free and #OpenInternet is an essential human right in modern society. We will work to restore access for all those in Nigeria who rely on Twitter to communicate and connect with the world. #KeepitOn
