Former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington is dead. He died at the age of 90.
In a statement signed by his wife (a Nigerian) and published Wednesday, August 12th, wife, Arese Carrington announced his death. Titled “Press Release – Ambassador Walter C Carrington, former US Ambassador to Nigeria and Senegal,” the statement reads:
“It is with a heavy and broken heart but with the gratitude to God for his life of selfless humanity that I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Walter Carrington, former US Ambassador to Nigeria and Senegal.
“He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 90 years old on Tuesday, August 11th, 2020.
“Further announcements will be made shortly.
“Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, cousin, uncle, friend and in-law.”
Carrington was an African American who took part in the civil rights movement in the US. He is reputed to have taken a keen interest in Nigeria and the Nigerian people. Indeed he got married to a Nigerian lady and lived in 3 of the country’s cities.
He was the the regional director for West Africa for the American Peace Corpse in the 60s and had his official residence in Nigeria.
He also served as the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Senegal and Nigeria. between 1993 and 1997.
