Wearing of face masks in Lagos is to become mandatory by next week according to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He however, cautioned against panic-buying of the masks as plans have been concluded to commence local production of large quantities.
According to him, the state government will ensure they are “pocket friendly as wearing of the face masks in public places will be compulsory.
Government officials will also “commence distribution of the locally manufactured face masks to large numbers of residents within a week.”
As at yesterday, April 19, the state recorded the highest increased confirmed cases of covid-19. With the 70 recoded yesterday, the total number of cases since the disease broke out in the state now stands at 379.
Lagos confirmed #COVID19 cases is followed by a mere 7 by the FCT at at 19th April.
However, the governor cautioned people not to panic as the new numbers are the result of increased testing capacity. This is also enhanced by the house-to-house testing strategy adopted by the state last week.
Sanwo-Olu advised Lagosians that contracting the coronavirus disease is not a death sentence as the state has witnessed a remarkable 20-30% recovery rate.
He also cautioned against stigmatising COVID19 as it will discourage other sick patients to request “wilfully for testing and treatment.”
Meanwhile, he also used the occasion of today’s address to assure residents that his administration has responded to the security situation in the state.
According to him, the Inspector General of Police deployed a special squad to “curb the antics of hoodlums and bandits who seek to take advantage of these challenging times.”
