The lawyer representing the #EndBadGovernance protesters, Inibehe Effiong has once again spoken about his observations on the nationwide protests, especially in Lagos.
During an interview on Channels Television, he disclosed plans to organize a candlelight procession in remembrance of the m*rdered or assaulted demonstrators and journalists who have been brutally repressed during the crackdown on the demonstrations.
Effiong claimed that the administration of Lagos state had failed to safeguard the demonstrators, expressing his dismay at their activities. As an attack on the freedom of peaceful assembly, he denounced the state government’s efforts to have the demonstrations confined to the park through the use of court orders.
A candlelight march to remember the victims of the crackdown, including journalists and those slain or attacked, has been planned by demonstrators in Lagos, according to Effiong.
His speech focused on the need of nonviolent assembly and condemned the Lagos state administration for permitting violence at Gani Fawehinmi Park, which is named after a famous activist. He also noted that protest momentum has decreased in other regions of the country.
Inibehe said that “For other parts of the country, the momentum has reduced. I think you have to contextualize it. The important point is that Nigerians—yes, I’m talking about Lagos—in Lagos, is anyone surprised? You see what is happening at the Gani Fawehinmi Park, and it is painful to me as a disciple of Gani. It is painful to me as someone who took inspiration from him that the Lagos state government, which named that park in his memory, is sitting back and allowing the memory of our legend to be dishonored by permitting, directly or indirectly, criminal elements and thugs to unleash mayhem at the park.”
