Many Christians across Nigeria have keyed in to the 2022 21-day fasting prayer simultaneously declared by their church leaders across the country.
The fasting period is said to ensure that the new year 2022 turns out better than any other year of their individual lives.
Prayers are also held at various times of the day within the period as directed by the leaders of the various Christian communities.
Most of the churches harnessed the features of the various social media platforms to engage with their congregations and ensure there is no disruption to regular daily activities.
With the virtual prayer sessions, many Christians have been saved the trouble of commuting to church premises while attendance is ensured by everyone within and outside Nigeria.
During the prayers, holy communion is taken and most pastors advise that any substance and liquid is permitted so long as they do not defeat the purpose of the ritual.
Pastor Jerry Eze of the Streams of Joy International aka New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations (NSPPD) observed that some members take whole slices of bread as communion.
He therefore announced during a church service that it defeats the purpose of the fasting. He stated that tiny pieces of bread and little quantities of liquid are all that is needed. Any portion beyond that, defeats the purpose.
Pastor Eze posted a picture of a large portion of Eba, Egusi soup, kpomo and other ‘orisiri’ meat chunks as substance for communion by a Christian and lamented that it is not allowed.
According to realjerryeze, “Dearest NSPPDIANS that are fasting , I know you use all kinds of things for Communion but using something like this or anything close to it is not part of it.
“We are fasting. If you use garri and soup for Communion of Answers, avoid me o; I am not laughing o!“
@itz_zino14, a member of Harvesters International Church headed by Pastor Bolaji Idowu tagged him lamenting that her observation.
According to her, “you’re doing online prayer and fasting with #Nlp. They said Wednesday is for Holy Communion. Someone brought adage bread, finished it with cold Pepsi. @bolajiid please be specifying the quantity we should use for communion.”
bolajiid, who is also the Convener of Next Level Prayer responded that,“This is a NO NO ! Who knows this person? Please tag!“
