The Chairman Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Barau Jibrin, has declared that he is the most qualified to be Senate President as he sets to battle Orji Uzor Kalu.
Barau, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, on Wednesday declared his ambition to contest for the position of the Senate President in the 10th National Assembly.
He promised to kick start his campaign officially in a few weeks.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the senator stated that he is the most ranking and experienced among those contesting the position with him.
He said: ”I intend to seek to be the President of the 10th Senate. I will formally declare and start my campaign in the next few days. The legislature is a distinct arm of government that doesn’t work based on sentiments but works on your ability to get the job done.
“Remember that David Mark was a Christian, Ike Ekweremadu, his Deputy was a Christian, and Patricia Etteh, the Speaker was a Christian because they were the most ranking, experienced and that is the tradition, so do we relegate competence to other sentiments.
“It is clear in the Senate Standing Rule that election for the Office of the Senate President shall be in accordance with most experience and ranking. And among those seeking to occupy that office, I have the highest ranking and experience.”
According to a former Presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba II, “Senator Barau Jibrin (Maliya), @BarauJibrin just declared for the office of the Senate Presidency for the 10th National Assembly, Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is from Kano, the Northwest zone that produced the highest number of votes for the APC. Interesting days ahead.”
